Unmanned Systems Training Centre (USTC)
The Unmanned Systems Training Centre delivers application-specific training to a range of clients and is developing educational packages for use in schools and colleges. While the USTC is based at Medicine Hat, Alberta, training courses are available at client locations across Canada, subject, for UAS training, to availability of airspace.
CCUVS is continuing to develop an unmanned systems training network. The initial network was established in Alberta in 2009. The aim is to develop the network nationally, so that training can be delivered as locally as possible. Web-based training functionality is being investigated.
Civil & Commercial Unmanned Aircraft Systems Safety Training (CCUST)
First Responders and Emergency Personnel - Rotary Wing
This course is focused on the needs of first responders and emergency services. The aim is to train government personnel in the safe operation of UAS in a selection of well defined scenarios. The five day course has been designed to deliver approximately 20 hours of pre-course study, based on a study pack and use of the Web, followed by two days of ground school, three days of practical flight training and testing on the UAS specified by the parent organisations of the personnel being trained. Typically this course uses small rotary wing unmanned aircraft. Please Contact Us for future course dates and locations.
Environmental Monitoring - Fixed Wing
This is the most useful 5 day course to understand all aspects of UAS operations. It involves approximately 20 hours of pre-course, private study using materials supplied by CCUVS, a day of confirmatory training by a Transport Canada approved instructor, an in-test to confirm the level of knowledge and a radio telephony course to train users to talk to air traffic controllers and other airspace users. This is followed by the practical phase with 2 days of ground school and 3 days of practical flight, which covers system components, system management and operation, flight file preparation, flight simulation, flight file uploading, safety check routines, flying missions, downloading flight files, post flight safety procedures and post flight data analysis. Some instruction is also given on payload sensors and sensor product exploitation. The ability to fly a remote control model aircraft enables students to get maximum value out of the course.
