Unmanned Systems Standards

The lack of civil and commercial standards for unmanned systems in all three environments, ground, sea and air, is a major obstacle to their safe exploitation. Standards are the basis for regulation by the authorities to allow unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to drive on public roads, for unmanned aircraft to fly alongside manned aviation in non-segregated airspace and for maritime systems (autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs)) to navigate busy shipping lanes.

While there are some standards activities for maritime (eg ASTM F41) and ground environments, there is now considerable activity internationally to develop standards for the civil and commercial use of UAS. Click here to go to the International page.
